The "Bricks by the Bay" convention, themed "The Brick Artistic" will run from Friday, April 9th thru Sunday, April 11th. at the Fremont Marriott Silicon Valley Hotel. The conventioneers have created masterpiece Lego creations that boggle the mind. Famous buildings and everything from a main street America scene to complete cities. One attraction sure to get a lot of attention is the built to scale Empire State Building. The convention is open to the public on Sunday only for a modest fee of $5.00 per person. Children under 2 are admitted free.

This fantastic and adventure filled set includes the huge Magna Mech tool driven by a single Power Miner. Magna Mech has two arms one of which is made of titanium and sports a scissor claw. The other mechanical arm is a spinning water jet. These tools are ideal for catching those mischievous, and sometimes dangerous, lava monsters. Well, we said give us a week and you'd have all of the new Lego Ben 10 Alien Force sets at the store. We are a day late but the NASCAR Daytona 500 lasted for hours. Well worth the wait though as it was an exciting finish. Anyway, the Toy Building Bricks store now has all of the Ben 10 sets available and the prices couldn't be better. These sets are all about Ben Tennyson and his alien magical watch, Omnitrix. As you know the watch allows Ben to transform himself into different alien species. Yes it's true. Lego Atlantis toy building sets now have had their own own temporary home at the ToyBuildingBricks.com online store. Their permanent digs will be with whoever decides to take them home. :) Be sure to head over and check it out. You'll find sets featuring the Salvage Crew, some creepy Atlantis Warriors and Guardians too. Of course, some of the favorite sets are the Atlantis Vehicles. The Seabed Scavenger and the Neptune Carrier are just a of couple examples. Warning! When going for the Atlantis treasure key watch out for the frightful Shadow Snapper.

In the last post I said that we were going to add-on and we are, with more to come. We're just taking our time and doing it right! The current project is Ben 10 Alien Force. These great sets will be rolling out in less than a week. I can hardly wait!

A Google "toy building bricks" alert turned up an interesting article in the UK tabloid paper The Sun. Not a news source we usually read but found this bit of information interesting. They featured an article headlined: "Playing Lego Is Brain Booster" and stated that those who are experts at using the Lego toy building bricks are more agile with their hands and minds . Well, come on Mr. UK Sun writer, we here in the U. S. have know that all along! The article also stated that the Lego company has come up with a Lego IQ rating system developed by the Master Builders at Britain's Legoland Discovery Centre. I'll tell you what. Well, we've heard you and the renovations are going to start soon. We'll be adding some new categories such as the very popular Atlantis, Toy Story, Ben 10, and Universe sets. You'll also be seeing Creator, Mindstorms and Technic sets with their own pages too. We agree that it's just not fair for these great sets to not have their own home!

We've long known that SpongeBob has a funny side to him. Just look at who he hangs out with. Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Larry the Lobster and of course that fabulous teacher Mrs. Puff. Think about all the jokes these characters can pull on each other. I came across a SpongeBob joke book the other day and thought I'd share a couple with you so here goes.

What happened to SpongeBob when he sat on his chewing gum? He became SpongeBob Chair Pants! How much does Mr. Krabs eat? Just a pinch! Why did Mrs. Puff wear sunglasses to school? Because she has bright students!

A really fun time would be for you and your friends to get all of your Lego SpongeBob toy building sets together and see what jokes you can make up using the different characters. When someone comes up with a really good one, write it down, take it to school and share with your class!

We here at Toy Building Bricks Blog hope you had a very merry Christmas. The holidays are almost over and it's getting close to going back to school time. We still have New Years Eve to celebrate and Legoland California has planned a great event complete with fireworks and live music. Five time Parents Choice Gold Award winner Justin Roberts and the Not for Naptime Players will be rockin' out at Miniland starting at 4:00 PM New Years Eve. As a super added attraction Hollywood's biggest new kids entertainment group The Jumpitz will be doing their shows as well.

At 12 AM KST (Kid's Standard Time) or 6:00 PM GCT (Grownup California Time) New Year's Eve. a 22 ft Lego Toy Brick Drop will begin it's decent complete with party favors, noise makers and fireworks show! Oh yes, you parents might be interested in this bit of information. The winner of the new Volvo XC90 will be announced at this time too. So get your glad rags on and go have some Lego fun!

Legoland California Lights Giant Lego Christmas Tree

Well it's official now. On December 30th Legoland California lighted the worlds largest Lego Christmas tree. The tree stands at 30 feet tall and was built using more than 245,000 Lego Duplo bricks! This was the day the holiday festivities kicked off and holiday fun will continue right up to and including New Years Day 2010. This is a great time of year to visit Legoland California with it's sparkling lights and a life size Lego Santa and reindeer. during the holidays be sure and look for the miniature Santas and reindeers delivering gifts throughout the park! New Attraction Opening in Time for This Summer's Legoland California Vacation

Another exciting attraction, Dune Raiders, will be opening at Legoland California’s Land of Adventure June 26th 2009. The attraction will be a 30-foot-high ultimate slide experience that features six side-by-side 50-foot-long racing lanes which include a pair of double-helix corkscrews. Dune Raiders is Egyptian bazaar themed and complete with fun new LEGO models and interactive LEGO model scenes. Dune Raiders is the fifth attraction within the parks newest area, which also includes the first dark ride, Land of Adventure, and the 16 feet tall, 300,000 Lego brick, Pharaoh.

I added Lego Power Miners toy building sets to our store a couple of days ago. I really like these sets and highly recommend them. They rate the 2nd highest in popularity of all Lego sets! There are four very smart and experienced miners; Duke, Rex, Doc and Brains and they operate six unique and complex drilling, excavating, mining machines. These Power Miner sets include; the Stone Chopper, Mine Mech, Granite Grinder, Claw Digger, Thunder Driller and the awesome, two driller, Crystal Sweeper. Lego Baby Toys. Will the Name Finally Stick?

The original Lego Baby toy building sets for children 1 year to 18 months old was originally called Duplo Baby which was changed to Lego Primo. Well, this lasted for a few years until the US branch of the company change the name again. Fearing Primo being associated with "preemie" or premature babies, Lego changed the name yet again; this time to simply Baby. It seems this wasn't working well either so Duplo and Baby merged and the name was changed again to Explore! Guess what? Lego Baby is in once again and the baby toys are know by that name to this day. The present day Lego Baby toys are represented, not by the original elephant, but by a teddy bear mascot. This is almost too much information...lol Bottom line is, we all know that there are Lego toy building sets for all ages!

I was thinking back a few years and the Lego Duplo days came to mind. I remembered the kids playing with Lego sets called Duplo Babies or Quatro Babies or was it just Quatro? I did remember them being bigger than Duplos. I was also wondering if someone had some of these old sets would they work with with today's Duplo sets. The birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. being celebrated on Monday, January 19th and Barack Obama’s inauguration taking place the next day is considered to be an even more than normal historic event, considering the President elects black heritage. In addition to the inauguration display, Legoland California Model Builders have built a large Lego mural to honor MLK. The mural represents the famous “I have a dream” speech and will be on display all weekend and Monday. Inauguration ceremonies in the U.S. have been happening every four years for more than 200 years. This year will be a first in that over twenty Legoland California Master Model Designers and Master Model Builders have created the historic event entirely out of Lego toy bricks. Legoland California visitors can be a part of the 56th Presidential Inauguration at Miniland U.S.A.

A Barack Obama minifigure is shown taking the Presidential oath of office, being sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts. President elect Obama, and his family, V.P. elect Jo Biden and his wife Jill, President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and wife Lynn, as well as past President George Bush Sr. and wife Barbara minifigures have been created entirely out of hundreds of Lego bricks. In all more than one thousand minifigures were created to give Park visitors an idea of what the real inauguration being preformed in Washington D.C. might look like.

This is good news because you don’t have to spend vast sums of money, fight the hoards, and maybe have a place to sleep within a few hundred miles of Washington, D.C. You know, while just setting here and letting my wander, it never fails to blow my mind when I see SpongeBob, flipping krabby patties, at the old Krusty Krab in Bikini Bottom. Can you think about that and not smile?...lol And after work heading home to his pineapple house. Maybe hanging out on the patio with his pal Squidward swatting those pesky jellyfish! I'm not talking TV here. A full color action cartoon in the mind can take a person where TV will never tread. And that's exactly what kids experience when they're playing with their Legos! I love these characters for their wackiness! I have just recently put up a Lego SpongeBob article on the

Sick Down Time

Sorry for the conspicuous lack of posts the last few days. I've had a case of the old fashion genuine FLU. And I did get a flu shot back in November like I do every year. It's no fun so take precautions my friends and if you start feeling bad don't mess around, get to the doctor! I'm feeling about 50% better now and the meds are beginning to do their thing.

Legoland California January Activities

The weekend of January 17 - 19 will be Martin Luther King Jr Weekend at Legoland California. Park visitors can view a Lego mural depicting MLK's famous "I Have A Dream" speech.

Saturday, January 17th will also be Underwater Parks Day at Sea Life Aquarium with activities to raise kid's awareness of Marine Protected Areas and the importance of the oceans ecosystem.

Saturday January 24th will see the Keebler Kids Marathon Mile. All ages are welcome in a non-competitive one mile run/walk meant to introduce kids to the fun of fitness.

Useful Information for Pre-planning Your Legoland California Vacation

There are four Legoland parks in the world and Legoland California is the only one in the U.S. The parks are built and designed for kids between the ages of 2 and 12 and their parents. At Legoland California there are more than 50 exciting rides, 9 Lego themed areas with each having their own attractions and interactive shows and several Lego themed shops and restaurants. The landscaping at Legoland is spectacular with specimens of trees and plant life from all over the world. There are over 1,000 bonsai trees alone! Legoland employs a team of professional Lego Master Model Builders to design, build, and maintain the over 15,000, small to very large, Lego models on display.

Legoland California is open year around, 7days a week from the last week of May thru June, July and August. During the school year the park is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays except most school holidays. These school holidays are Thanksgiving (the last week of November) and Christmas (the last 2 weeks of December) as well as spring and fall breaks. The gates open at 10:00AM and the park closes anywhere from 5:00PM in the winter months to 8:00PM during the last 2 weeks of May and the months of June, July, and August. These times may vary somewhat so it would be a good idea to consult the Legoland California website or the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau when planning your trip.

When paying to enter the park at the gate one day tickets are $62 for adults and for children ages 3 to 12 and seniors over 60 the price is $52. A 2 day pass is a little better deal at $77 for adults and $65 for children and seniors. There's never a charge for children 2 and under. For those who live in the area or just plan to visit several times a year there are various economical membership programs that include unlimited yearly admission. Legoland and Sea Life Aquarium combo tickets are also available. One day tickets for Sea Life Aquarium only are available at Resort ticket booths and cost $11.95 for children, $15.95 for seniors and $18.95 for adults.

Booking your hotel accommodations at Legoland California Resort, online and in advance, is always a smart move. Not only will you not have to worry about where to stay when you get there, you will probably enjoy considerable savings as well.

The World's Tallest Lego Tower

I was surfing around the net today and came across an article telling of the world's tallest Lego tower. I already knew about this wonder and thought it would make an interesting blog post so, after refreshing my memory, I jotted this short version down.

Legoland Windsor in the UK set a new world record for the tallest Lego tower made entirely of Lego bricks. Thousands of children and their families helped put the final bricks in place to complete the monster structure, The tower which which stands close to 100ft tall, was built by 1000’s of kids and their families and is designed to resemble the mast of a Viking longboat. The structure was completed at the Berkshire park to mark the opening of the new Land of the Vikings land at the park.

The tower is made using nearly a half million bricks and is positioned at the park's main entrance. This monster celebrates the 50th anniversary of the popular Lego Binding Bricks. (These binding bricks became officially known as Lego Bricks in 1953). Kids helped build the tower in approximately 8 inch thick sections, with each section being hoisted into place by a crane. The former record for the tallest Lego tower was just a bit over 96f feet set in Toronto, Canada in August 2007.

Happy new year to everyone! Well, here we are in the year 2009. Who would have thought it? I didn't think I'd even get to see 2000 back in the last century when I was a kid!

Speaking of being a kid, I posted a little nostalgic story yesterday on another favorite blog of mine that you might find interesting. The story is all about spending time with my grandparents, while growing up in the Texas Panhandle, and the fond memories I have of those days. The bad thing is that it pretty much tells the reader my age. Just goes to show that Lego fans are ageless!

As I said in my last post there is good news for 2009 from Lego. Brand new Lego pirate sets are being released and some are already on the toy store shelves. This will be yet another good year for Lego fans and collectors alike! ....BV

Ahoy mate! Lego pirates on the horizon! Part 2

Good News! Recently there has been some really good news for Lego pirate enthusiasts. Lego is coming out with new pirate theme sets in the 2009 releases. Some online stores are already stocking these sets. The timing on these releases is set to coincide with, and to celebrate, the 20th anniversary of the 1st Lego pirate sets released way back in 1989. A Brickbeard’s Bounty set and a Lego Soldier’s Fort set are a couple of these new releases. Welcome back mates!

For a lot of people, including adults, who enjoyed the early releases of the pirate themed adventure sets, the pirates and their ships are not just toys. They are more like childhood treasures full of memories. Treasures they have spent many hours with, fantasizing about being right there with Captain Roger and his mate Rummy, sailing the high seas, looking for treasure ships to pillage! These toys are far from being old and worn out and they will most likely become family treasures themselves, handed down from generation to generation. Educational, challenging, entertaining, and long lasting are just a few of the reasons that bring people to love their Lego toy building sets. Yar!

Lego Pirate sets were first released in 1989. The included in these 1st Lego pirate sets were minifigures that didn’t have a very real looking head and only had 2 painted dots for eyes and a simple drawn smile. There were pirates minifigs that varied from the fro the others and these had drawn beards, hair and painted eye patches. From 1889 thru 1991 Imperial Soldiers with blue coats and a European look were released from to chase down the plundering pirates.

A Lego comic book titled “The Gold Medallion” debuted in 1989 as well. In 1989, one of the characters in a Lego pirate set was Captain Redbeard, also known as Captain Roger, was released and he quickly became Lego’s most popular pirate. He and his first mate, Rummy, could often be found on a ship in the open seas doing what pirates do best. Robbing and pillaging!

In 1992 the Imperial Soldiers were replaced by the Imperial Guards and were on the scene through 1995. During this time period the Lego Pirate sets took on a definite Spanish look and feel. During 1996 and 1997 we saw the Spanish Armada on the scene, patrolling the pirate controlled seas and chasing those plundering ships flying the Jolly Roger.

The last few Lego pirate themed sets were released in 1997. This was a surprise to the many Legos pirate fans. These pirate sets had become one of the Lego company’s best selling products. A few pirate sets have since been re-released and the pirate theme can be found in a few Lego Duplo sets as well.

Tips on Building A Lego Castle You Can Be Proud Of

It really doesn’t matter whether you are a long time Lego castle enthusiasts, or you are simply flexing your fingers with this project for the first time. All we can guarantee you is that castle building using everyone’s favorite Lego bricks is bound to give you hours and hours of enjoyment. Also, no matter what castle architecture model you are using (if you even have one,) there is a lot of room to really exercise your creative spirit. Of course, nothing beats that sense of accomplishment of placing the last Lego brick on a really good model. After one really great piece, you are bound to get hooked. This can either encourage you to do more, or make you want to top of your work with something bigger, grander and more elaborate.

As they say, you are only limited by your imagination; and this is pretty much true with castle building. However, if you take the time to look at the other Lego castle models, particularly those created by like-minded enthusiasts on the Internet, you might notice that some look quite authentic as small scale models. Of course, there are always the whimsical looking ones, or the ones done without actual models. But still, the ones that earn that hard, long look are those that show great attention to detail. Here are some tips on how you can make that castle you can be proud of.

1. Remember that your building model is only as good as the number of bricks you actually have. So unless you are prepared to shell out a lot of dough to complete one castle set-up, you need to really start thinking small. You do not have to make a 6-feet-by-6-feet replica of an old castle to achieve a really great piece, even if you are using large Lego blocks. Start small and build up from there.
2. One way of “cheating” with your architecture is to make the castle as hollow as possible. After all, building inspectors will not get on your case if you don’t make your interiors as delicate as possible. This is actually one of the mistakes that most novice castle builders make – creating a solidly made edifice that use up most, if not all of the bricks and space. Since the Lego bricks can stand on their own, you can maximize the use of the pieces and the available space by hollowing out the interiors.

3. A solid construction is one thing; a realistic looking one is quite another. One of the best ways of presenting an old castle is to make it look like it is either moss-ridden or crumbling on the sides. This gives your piece a more authentic look, and helps break up the monotony of a one-colored building façade. You can either skip a few bricks here and there or change the color of the bricks to give your castle a sort of battle-worn, time-eroded feel. Adding a bit of green colored pieces on the base of the castle (or some other parts of the edifice) can also provide a different dimension to your work. Adding small “windows” can also help break up the monotony, so don’t forget to include these as well. The key here is to use colors that will both complement and contrast with the entire castle facade.

Since its modest beginnings in 1932, the Lego company continues to make adults and children alike happy with new play sets being continuously released in the toy market. History of the Lego Company

Lego is the toy building set of choice for children, and the young at heart, worldwide. Lego is a company in Denmark known for its colourful plastic bricks that interlock to build everything from buildings to space ships. To accompany the building bricks, other accessories are sometimes included, such as gears, wheels, and the ever-popular minifigures with interchangeable heads, hands, legs and torso. Everything made using Lego bricks can easily be taken apart and built again and again. Ever since they first debuted in 1940, the Lego Company has grown to become so massive that it now has several theme parks and video games to just name a couple.

With beginnings vastly different from those of other toys, Legos have always been unique. The original concept was born by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, who made houses and furniture. It can be said that those were the very inspirations for Lego bricks.

Because of the Great Depression, Christiansen was forced to create miniature products that acted as design aids. Those were the very first Lego bricks that eventually inspired him to go into toy making. He manufactured other toys first, such as wooden piggy banks and yoyos. Eventually, he named his company Lego, an amalgamation of the Danish words leg and godt that meant ‘play well’. When plastic became widely used, He was inspired by the company Kiddicraft to make his own interlocking bricks. He then began building Legos and selling his new products, which would eventually take the world by storm.
